Abstract

Fuel is one of the main factors affecting the running costs of the ship and the engine operating. In ship operation, heavy fuel often dominates due to its relatively low costs, despite the problems related with its treatment complexity and bad combustion properties. It is expected further worsening of  fuel properties in future because of  the increase of the  ratio of light products in modern refineries and deteriorating of residual fuel parameters. Therefore, this paper outlines the most problems resulting from the use of residual fuels on ship and in the engine.  As conclusion, the paper suggests recommendations for facing the mentioned problems and put correct rules for the handling with fuels and adaptation of  the marine diesel engines with the variable conditions.
