The relation between urinary tract infections and preterm labor

Abstract

Background: Preterm labor (PTL) is responsible for most cases of neonatal death. In most of these cases, the causes of PTL have not been established although several risk factors have been described.

Aim: This study was designed to find and correlate the association between urinary tract infections (UTI) and preterm labour. Also to find out prevalence of UTI in preterm and full term labour.

Materials and Methods: This was a  prospective case - control study conducted at Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in Tishreen University Hospital, Lattakia, during the period between June 2020 – June 2021.

125 pregnant women without risk factors for PTL were chosen. The control group (n= 55) had term labor (gestational weeks ≥ 37 weeks),  and the case group (n = 70) had PTL (gestational weeks < 37 weeks).

The two groups were screened for urinary tract infection.

Results: In our study, UTI was seen in 16 women in PTL group (22.8 %) compared with 4 women in full term labor group (7.3 %), and the difference was statistically significant
 (p = 0.081).

UTI increased the risk of PTL (OR: 3.77, CI95%: 1.18–12.05, P=0.0248).

E.Coli was the most isolated pathogen in both preterm and term labor.

Conclusion:  UTI  was more common in women with preterm labor compared to those in full term labour patients group, which indicates a significant association of UTI  in preterm labor. UTI contributes significantly to preventable cause of labour.
