Abstract

Background: The progress in neonatal medicin during the last two decades has led to high rate of survival in preterm infants and increase in their exposure to red blood cells transfusion during hospitalization.

Objectives: studying the indicatins and complications of red blood cells transfusion in extremly and very low birth weight preterm infants.

Materials and Methods: Observational descreptive Cross -sectional study included94 preterm infants of extremly and very low birth weght preterm admitted to the neonatal Intensive care Unit at Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia during 2020-2021. two groups were distinguished, the first group was exposed to transfusion at least once, second group was not exposed to transfusion. SPSS software was used for data analysis,Pvalue <0,05 was considered as statistically significant.

Results:REsearch sample included94 preterm infants six of them were extremly low birth weight ,the mean of geastitional age was 30,9 and the mean of birth weight was 1475 gram, blood transfusion rate was 70,2%. the most common indication for transfusion was bleeding and apnea24,2% followed by an improvement general condition 21,2% then anemia 13,6%. blood transfusion was a risk factor for necrotizing enterocollitis OR=2,8 and intraventricular hemorrage OR=2,4 but was not assosiated with chronic lung disease and retinopathy of prematurity. respiratory support and cardiopulmonary disease were very important causes for transfusion,

Conclusion:red blood cells transfusion is anecessary procedure in certain cases but it must be done with absolute indication to reduce potential serious complications such as NEC,IVH,CLD and ROP.
