Retrospective study: the cervical smear role in detecting woman cancer in out-patient clinic of gynecological department.

Abstract

Objective: To experience cervical smear efficacy in detecting uterine and extra-uterine malignancy in gynaecological clinic.

Material: All cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer reports were reviewed, between October 2004 and December 2005. All related previous cervical smears were also reviewed.

Results: 17 cases of cancer were reported in women aged 36 to 72 years (mean, 52). One vaginal and six cervical sqamous cell carcinoma reported with four endometrial malignancies (3 adenocarcinomas, one choriocarcinoma) and four ovarian papillary cyst adenocarcinoma (three serous and one mucinous) with one ovarian dysgerminoma. The final case was adenocarcinoma in recto-vaginal fistula.

Out of all these cases, 6 cervical smears were taken previous to the final diagnosis.

In one endometrial and two ovarian, adenocarcinoma, cervical smears showed efficient diagnostic method over other measures. 

Conclusion: even when cervical smear is not applied as an efficient screening tool in the society, it can be an important test for investigation of uterine and extra-uterine malignancy.
