Evaluation Of The Periodontal Tissues Condition In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients. ( Statistical Study )
Abstract
Aim of study: to evaluate the clinincal and radiological features of periodontal tissues in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, and evaluation of the effect of drugtreatment with corticosteroid on their periodontal condition.
Materials and Methods:A sample of 32 patients aged between 19 and 52 years, all of them females, were collected from the departments of rheumatic diseases and dermatology at Tishreen University Hospital and Al-Mowasat University Hospital . Data related to the systemic disease and periodontal disease were recorded according to a form for each patient. The periodontal pocket depth index (PD), the bleeding on probing (BOP) and the correlation of corticosteroid treatment with PD and BOP were evaluated. The sample was divided into two groups, the first group includes patients undergoing continuous corticosteroid treatment, while the second group includes patients who are exposed to corticosteroid treatment during attacks of the disease (inconsistently).
Results:The third stage of the periodontal disease development stages recorded half of the sample cases, and the differences were stastistically significant at the second and third stage from the rest of the stages, the differences were also stastistically significant at the degree of periodontal disease c. As for the radiographic evaluation, for the second stage, in which the radial bone loss extends from 15-33% of the surviving third of the root, the largest number of the sample, but the differences were not stastistically significant between the rest of the stages of radial bone loss. The association between the clinically stage of periodontal disease progression and the stage of radial bone loss was strong and stastistically significant at the p=0.00, The average values of the depth of the periodontal pockets ranged between 5-6 mm,and this value was satistically significant at p=0.00,the values of probing bleeding index ranged between 1 and 2,and the differences were not satistically significant at the level of significance 5%, continuous cortisone treatment was associated with an increase in the depth of periodontal pockets, and the difference was stastisically significant between the first and second groups in terms of cortisone treatment, the degree 2 of the probing bleeding index values was also associated with patientsundergoing cortisone treatment, but these differences were not stastisticallysignificant with the second group at the level of significance 5%.
Concusions: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus has an effect on the state of the periodontal tissues, in terms of the formation of periodontal pockets and bleeding upon probing, and cortisone drug treatment had a role in increasing the depth of the periodontal pocket.
