Abstract

Purpose:. to assess the effect of phenylephrine10% on intraocular pressure.

Materials and Methods: this cross-sectional study included 180 eyes of 90 patients (18-58years). Patients whith glaucoma, closed angle, surgical history and eye disorders were excluded. After taking detail history and examination, IOP was measured by air puff device. then phenylephrine10% was instilled on right eye . IOP was again measured after 30 minutes and after 60 minutes . Data was collected and analyzed on SPSS 21. Means of IOP was compared before and after dilatation

Results: Intraocular pressure increased after dilation of the pupils with phenylephrine 10% after 30 minutes of the last drop in both eyes by 0.46% in the right eye, which is a clinically insignificant difference( P-Value =0,002), but it is statistically significant. The elevation in the left eye was 0.06%, which is a clinically insignificant and statistically insignificant difference (P-Value =0,1).

The intraocular pressure decreased slightly at 60 minutes after instillation, but remained above its value before dilation in the right eye.

We found that this increase in the intraocular pressure value resulting from the instillation of phenylephrine 10% was not associated with the gender and refractive status of the patient, while there was a positive correlation with age.

Conclusion:. There was statistically significant difference in intraocular pressure after mydriasis with phenylephrine10%.

Keywords: .mydriasis, intraocular pressure, phenylephrine10%.
