Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and recurrent aphthous stomatitis by evaluating blood hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular volume, and ferritin levels in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Materials and Methods: Blood tests were conducted on thirty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis between December 2021 and December 2023, representing the study group. Thirty age and gender-matched individuals were selected as the control group. Hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular volume, and ferritin concentration in the blood were compared between the two groups.

Results: The sample included 60 patients ranging in age from 16 to 37 years, with a mean age of 26.74 years. The average hemoglobin concentration in the blood within the study group was 10.78 g/dL, while it was 12.45 g/dL in the control group. The mean corpuscular volume within the study group was 82.07, while it was 87.06 in the control group. The average ferritin concentration within the study group was 82.07, while it was 87.06 in the control group. Blood hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular volume, and ferritin concentration were statistically higher in the control group compared to the study group.
