Abstract

Background: Colorectal cancer CRC constitutes a major health problem, as it ranks third as the most common malignancy and the second cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Colorectal cancer develops slowly and may remain silent without symptoms for a long period of time. Detecting it, treating it, and managing its complications represent a challenge for doctors. Therefore, medical research focuses on studying, identifying, and managing the potential factors involved in its pathogenic mechanism, with the aim of reducing its occurrence.

Recently, many epidemiological studies have indicated a link between dyslipidemia and the occurrence of many cancers such as: colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer.. etc

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate dyslipidemia in patients with coloectal cancer

Materials and methods: This study included 184 patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed by lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and confirmed by histological study at Tishreen University Hospital in Lattakia during the year 2022 . The patients were classified according to blood lipid values into CRC patients with accompanying dyslipidemia, their number was 142, and CRC patients without accompanying dyslipidemia, their number was 42.

Results: High plasma levels of LDL and T.chol, and low plasma levels of HDL were most associated with cases of rectal cancer and left colon cancer. While high plasma levels of TG was most associated with cases of right colon cancer. It was noted that the incidence of dyslipidemia was higher in males with CRC compared to females, and statistically significantly (Pvalue = 0.04) . It was also observed that there was an increased presence of dyslipidemia in CRC patients with increasing age, statistically significantly, Pvalue = 0.0001. No statistically significant differences were observed when studying the relationship between presence of dyslipidemia in patients with colorectal cancer according to the anatomical location of the tumor, but it was noted that 43% of all cases of dyslipidemia were present in the rectal cancer group, 37.3% of which were present in the left colon cancer group and 19.7% it was present in the right colon cancer group.

Conclusion: Our study showed that dyslipidemia has a potential role in being a risk factor for the development of CRC   .
