Abstract
Aims of the study: Measuring the height and the Body Mass Index as indicators of the general health of the population in Syria, in groups of men and women and comparing them, as well as comparing them with measures in some foreign countries.
Materials and methods: 202 women and 102 men were included, their height and weight were recorded, and the BMI was calculated. They were grouped according to age, and the different groups were compared. A comparison was also made with measurements in other studies done in some foreign countries.
Results: There was a clear trend in improvement in the height of the groups in sequence but more than half of them were overweight or obese. In comparison with developed countries, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was similar to that of Syria, but the mean height was less. However, the situation in Syria was better than North Africa and middle Asia.
Summary: Height and weight have important health indices in Syria. They are also important data in teaching healthy behavior to patients and to the population as a whole.
