Abstract
- An epidemiologic study of /150/ patients admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine in Assad University Hospital in Lattakia diagnosed of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) during one year (period of study from 1/7/2004 to 1/7/2005), without any previous data about the incidence rate in our country (comparison wise).
- The study included /79/ female (52.66%) and /71/ male (47.33%).
- It was noticed that there has been gradually increasing in the incidence rate beginning from fifth decade with a highest incidence rate at eighth decade for both (31%).
- The patients were divided according to the pattern of the CVA – and for both genders into:
Ischemic: 130 patients = 86.66%.
Hemorrhagic: 20 patients = 13.33%.
- The most important risk factors were: arterial hypertension (66%), then smoking, hyperlipidemia, diabetic mellitus, ischemic heart disease, obesity, prior CVA.
- The CVA developed to death in "16" patients = 10.66% of cases.
