Abstract
More than 50% of out patients suffer from functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGD), and many of the physicians try to apply anti-parasites treatment as part of management of this FGD, because of the high prevalence of parasites in our country. This study aimed to look for the possibility of causal relation between the FGD and the intestinal parasites in order to apply the suitable treatment.
This study includes 386 patients (out patients) divided into two groups: A = 282 patients with FGD, and group B = 104 patients without any FGD. The percentage of the parasitosis in the first group (A) was 39.27%, while it was 39.26% in the second group (B). There was (P > 0.05) semi equal positivity for entamoeba histolytica (23.4% group A) and (25% group B) in both groups (P > 0.05). The fact that there was no difference between the two groups indicates that there is no role for intestinal parasites in FGD.
