Comparative study of Molar Distalization with Coil Spring Anchored by Mini Implants and Carrier Device in Patients of Class II Malocclusion

Abstract

The Aim: The aim of the current study was to compare Overbite and Overjet  variables between a group of Springs Anchored by mini implants, a group of Carrier appliance, and a group of Distal jet appliance in patients with Class II malocclusion.

Materials and Methods:  51 patients aged 12-14 with Class II malocclusion were selected for the current study. They were randomly divided into three groups of 17 patients each. The first group received Springs anchored by mini implants, the second group received Carrier appliances from the upper canine to the first upper molar on both sides, and the third group received Distal jet appliances. Overbite and Overjet were evaluated in all three groups from the start of orthodontic treatment until completion of correction and achieving a Class I relationship.

Results: The mean value of Overbite between the groups G1 (Springs), G2 (Carrier), and G3 (Distal jet) was 2.50, with the mean value in group G2 being 0.03, without a significant difference compared to group G1, while for group G3 it was -1.42, with a significant difference. The mean value of Overjet in group G2 was 0.25 compared to group G1, without a significant difference, and 0.75 compared to group G3, with a significant difference.
Conclusions: Treatment with the Carrier appliance resulted in values Overbite and Overjet  close to those of the group Springs anchored by mini implants, while the lack of Overbite and Overjet in the Distal jet group was greater than in groups G1 and G2.
