The impact of climate change on the Food Security Index in the Syrian Arab Republic

Abstract

   This study aimed to study the impact of climate changes on the Food Security Index as an indicator of sustainable development in Syria during the period (2021-1990), climate changes were represented by variable temperatures and variable rainfall, as it is considered one of the most important indicators of the climate situation, this study dealt with the Food Security Index expressed by the average per capita of the Food Security Index, where we calculated it by dividing wheat production (being a strategic crop in Syria) by the population during the study period, based on the fact that Syria is a primarily agricultural country, and agricultural production is a cornerstone of economic growth, and in addition, the agricultural sector is one of the most Sensitivity to climate changes, we used the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to find out the impact of climate changes on the Food Security Index. the study found a statistically significant relationship between climate changes represented by (temperatures-rainfall) and the Food Security Index in Syria. the study recommended taking measures to mitigate the effects of climate changes, because of their significant negative effects on important sustainable development indicators such as the Food Security Index.
