Abstract

The phenomenon of informal Settlements has attracted the attention of many planners and decision-makers. As addressing this issue requires obtaining accurate information about it and its spatial characteristics, the production of functional maps that reflect its current state is a necessary process for sustainable development.

In this study, a specialized Geoprocessing spatial analysis tool was designed within a GIS environment to analyze this phenomenon in the city of Latakia. This was done by analyzing the relationship between the degree of informality of housing within informal settlements and their spatial distribution, using spatial data that reflects the current situation. The Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model was applied to analyze the spatial impact of several variables on the degree of informality in order to produce functional maps that reflect the current state of informality and identify the necessary interventions and priorities.

The results showed that there are large areas of informal housing in urgent need of improvement in the neighborhoods of Al-Da'atur and Ali Jamal, with a total area of 27.2 and 19.4 hectares, respectively. Additionally, smaller areas in the Al-Zaqzakaniah neighborhood require urban development according to several priorities.
