Abstract

Objective: The correct diagnosis is the mainstay of successful treatment for patients, and this must be confirmed through appropriate diagnostic methods before starting treatment. As for oral lesions, they have a relatively wide spread and include a group of clinical and macroscopic manifestations that may be similar to each other in addition to the difference in the macroscopic manifestations of the same lesion among patients. Therefore, their accurate diagnosis in a timely manner is important in increasing the effectiveness of treatment and preventing complications in the event of insufficient treatment, and here comes the essential role of histopathology in the accurate diagnosis of these lesions.

Materials and methods: The sample included 86 patients attending the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Surgery at Tishreen University Hospital in Lattakia, who were suffering from a complaint of an oral lesion and fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and their age ranged from 5 to 60 years. All patients participating in the study were interviewed and the following information was recorded for each patient: name, gender, age, habits and instincts such as smoking and alcohol A comprehensive history was taken from the patients, a comprehensive clinical examination of the head and neck, and a thorough examination of the mouth were performed. Based on the examination, an initial clinical diagnosis was established, then a biopsy of the oral lesion was performed and sent to histopathology. After the results appeared, the compatibility between the clinical diagnosis and the histopathological findings of these lesions was studied.

Results: The percentage of concordance between the clinical diagnosis and the histopathological outcome of oral lesions was 75.6% of the studied research sample.

Conclusions: Our study found a significant agreement between the clinical diagnosis and the histopathological findings of the oral lesions, but this percentage did not reach full agreement. Therefore, biopsy remains the golden standard in diagnosis even in benign lesions to rule out dysplasia or latent malignancy.
