Knowledge and Practices of Mothers About Home Accidents Among Children Under Five years

Abstract

Home accidents are the most important cause of death for children aged 1 to 5 years. Safe and effective management of the home environment is crucial to protect children from home accidents that can cause injury, disability or death. Therefore, mothers must have information and practices about taking preventive measures and providing a safe environment to ensure the safety of their children at home, so the current study aimed to assessment knowledge and practices of mothers about home accidents among children under five years on a sample consists of 100 mothers were randomly  selected the maternity and national children hospital in Lattakia , data were collected using a questionnaire developed for this purpose. The results of the current study showed that more than a third of mothers had children who were subjected to home accidents, and the majority of injuries were wounds, followed by falls and then burns, and the results also showed that the majority of mothers have correct practices about preventing home accidents in general. The study recommended the need to activate educational programs that aim to improve mothers' knowledge and practices with regard to home safety and ways to protect children from the risks of harm within the home.
