Practices of Mothers during Fever Management in Their Children

Abstract

Fever is common symptom associated with infections in childhood and about 60% of children experience fever three to six times in a year during their first five years of age. Fever occurs commonly in children and makes their parents unduly worried as they perceived it a danger ailment denoting some serious illness in their children. Mothers may apply incorrect practices in fever management that can have a negative effects on their children, so the current study aimed to assess mothers’ practices during fever management in their children on a convenient sample consists of 100 mothers were selected from the maternity and national children hospital in Lattakia, data were collected using a questionnaire developed for this purpose. The results of the current study showed that more than half of mothers had wrong practices about detecting and managing fever, these practices include measuring the temperature by touching the forehead, treating the child at home and using medications without consulting a doctor and applying cold compresses. The study recommended conducting educational programs for mothers about methods of measuring temperature and managing fever in their children.
