Abstract
The study included 150 newborns, with blood groups (A,B) [(A) 105, (B) 45] and mother’s blood group (O) who were born at Alassad University Hospital in the year (2004-2005). The male/female ratio was (1.7:1).
The average of children’s age at the onset of jaundice was 19.02 hours, and it was earlier in blood group B and in children of first pregnancy. Average of serum bilirubin level at 24 hours was 5.73 mg/dl; there was no statistical value of the blood group and the sex of the newborns in the bilirubin level.
Children had anemia at delivery in 12 cases, 6 of them were premature; 51 cases were followed for anemia; and 36 of them had anemia (70 %). Comparing between children who had anemia and those who had not, we found that the bilirubin level was higher in anemic children, and they had longer stay in hospital.
