Menstrual Cycle Disorders in Intrauterine Devices Users
Abstract
Background and objective: The intrauterine device (IUD) is the most widely used contraceptive method in the world. The main obstacle to long-term effectiveness is discontinuation of use for several reasons; one of the most important reasons is menstrual cycle disorders. Therefore, the research aims to evaluate these disorders and their relationship to several factors.
Patients and methods: The study included 160 participants, they were asked about the length of the menstrual cycle, the number of menses days, the number of sanitary pads used, spotting between periods and irregular menstruation before and after the insertion of the IUD. Dysmenorrhea was also assessed through a multi-dimensional verbal scoring system; the woman's satisfaction with IUD use was assessed by the five-point Likert scale.
Results: The copper IUD was the one used by all women in the study. The menstrual cycle disorders were distributed between prolonged menses by 20%, menorrhagia by 14%, irregular menstrual periods by 12%, and spotting between menses by 8%. Dysmenorrhea was recorded at a rate of 14%. We did not find a statistically significant relationship
(p-value> 0.05) between these disorders and age, number or type of births. The percentage of IUD removal due to menstrual cycle disorders was 9.6%. 78.8% of women were satisfied with this method.
Conclusion: Conclusion: IUD is an effective and safe method of contraception and is not often associated with severe menstrual disorders.
