Abstract

Objective: To examine whether dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids relieved symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea.

Patients and methods: : an experimental pilot study (prospective) was involved 42 patients among 16-24 years old, presented with primary dysmenorrhea at Tishreen university hospital in latakia between 2020-2021.

After examination and assessing the menstrual symptoms and the history of symptoms and exclusion the secondary dysmenorrhea, and BMI calculating; we gave them daily omega-3 capsules 1g for 3 months.

We used a visual analogue scale (VAS) to determine the severity of the pain (0 centimeter means no pain, 1-3 mild  , 4-6 moderate, 7-10 severe.

We used the verbal multidimensional scoring system for assessment of dysmenorrhea(0 no pain, no symptoms, analgesics none required, daily activity is unaffected; 3 severe pain, severe symptoms, poor effect of analgesics, activity inhibited)

Results: the current study showed that after initiation of treatment by omega-3, a decrease in visual analogue scale (VAS) was observed with statistically significant differences. The decrease after a month of treatment was 36.6% , after 2 months 82.1% , and 97.3% at the end of the treatment period. A statistically significant decrease in the verbal multidimensional scoring system for assessment of dysmenorrhea was also observed, the decrease after a month of treatment was 34.9%, after 2 months 76.6% and 93.6% at the end of treatment period.

Conclusion: Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids can lead to noticeable pain reduction among young women with primary dysmenorrhea. the use of omega-3 fatty acids could potentially offer an effective and safe treatment  in women with primary dysmenorrhea.
