Difficulties and complications of stapes surgery
Abstract
Background & Aim: Otosclerosis is relatively common cause of progressive conductive hearing loss, and stapedectomy is a common surgery in otolaryngology department of Tishreen University Hospital, but most patients with otosclerosis were treated by hearing aids in many other centers in our country, because they have no idea about the results of this surgery, and there is no researches about stapedectomy with surgical difficulties and complications, the aim of this research is to know the acoustic results of stapedectomy in our hospital and the effect of surgical difficulties and complications on acoustic results, and the rate of this surgical difficulties and complications.
Material & methods:A prospective study on 48 patients who had undergone stapedectomy in ENT department of Tishreen University Hospital, we dependent on the average of five frequencies (250-4000) HZ of the bone and air conduction and of the air bon gap (of pure ton audiogram) before and after surgery in all patients, then in patients with surgical difficulties and complications and without surgical difficulties and complications. We dependent on T test and P value.
Results: The successful incidence of stapedectomy in our study was 82.97% in all patients, 84.37% in patients without surgical difficulties and complications, and 80% in patients with surgical difficulties and complications. The incidence of profound sensorineural hearing loss (most important complication) was 2.08%, there is no difference in acoustic results between patients with surgical difficulties and complications and without surgical difficulties and complications (P=0.508)).
Conclusion: we can give the patient the surgical choice for otosclerosis with successful incidence about 82.97%.
