Abstract
As there are side effects for the multiple gestation on the pregnant woman and her outcome, and since international studies show an increase in the rate of multiple gestation in recent years, we studied multiple gestation born in Al-Assad University Hospital in Lattakia, focusing on the complications found in accepted twins in the Neonatal Department (wherever they were born) and accepted in our hospital during the year 2003-2004.
This study concentrated on the rate of multiple gestation in the Gynecologic Department, where it was 1.84% of all cases. It also showed the complications accompanying multiple gestation. Preterm born was 100%, hypoglycemia 85.82%, and hypocalcaemia 11.76%. These metabolic disorders were not life-threatening. Prenatal asphyxia was 44.12% and life-threatening. Dislocation of the hips was 5.9%, and was serious enough to let us diagnose this malformation of the hip clinically and radio logically in all multiple gestation.
