Abstract

While it is impossible to prevent earthquakes, it is possible to reduce their risks through effective preparation and planning to manage them. The percentage of damage and loss of lives and of properties is usually very high in countries that do not have a disaster management plan.

The current research paper aims to highlight the importance of disaster awareness, whereby the emergency activities is mapped included evacuation paths, identification of safe roads, places of shelters, field hospitals and initial needs of affected people. All that is achieved by using geographic information systems as an effective system during the stages of seismic disaster management.

Geographic information systems were used in two stages; the first to map the expected damage map for the study area, while the second, to empty the frameworks and solutions assumed basing on the previous damage map, hence reaching emergency solutions after the disaster. This article approaches the second stage in particular.
