A study to assess C reactive protein as a predictive value on severity of acute pancreatitis

Abstract

Acute pancreatitis is a common acute inflammatory process of the pancreas. Symptoms vary widely between individuals, and the severity of the disease ranges from mild, recovering and improving with supportive care, to severe illness with multiple organ failure and high mortality. About 10-20% of patients have a rapidly developing inflammatory response associated with a long hospital stay and a high incidence of Morbidity and mortality rate.

During the past 20 years, the incidence of acute pancreatitis has increased and is documented as one of the most common reasons for admission at gastroenterology wards.The pathogenesis involves early activation of pancreatic enzymes, which leads to auto-digestion of the pancreas and a severe inflammatory response by the immune system. The inflammatory reaction may be limited to the pancreas or may progress to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).

Alcoholism and gallstones are the most common causes of acute pancreatitis. Other causes include Carcinoma atthepapillaofvater, ERCP, hyperlipidemia and hypercalcemia, some infections (such as mumps and ascaris worms in the bile ducts, etc.), some medications (azathioprin and asparagenase). and tetracyclines ...), abdominal trauma, as well as acute idiopathic pancreatitis.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of C-reactive protein as a predictive value of the severity of acute pancreatitis, to identify a cut-off value for C-reactive protein associated with the severe form of acute pancreatitis, and to study the incidence of acute pancreatitis etiology, the incidence of acute pancreatitis complications, admission to intensive care, and mortality.
