The Content Analysis of Social Studies Curriculum in The Light of Critical Thinking Skills: An Analytical Study of Fifth Grade Textbook in The Syrian Arab Republic

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal the availability of critical thinking skills in Social Studies book for fifth grad in Syrian Arab Republic. Hence, the researcher adopted the descriptive method, and prepared a list of critical thinking skills. Then he designed a content analysis card, and checked the validity and reliability. The results showed a semi-complete availability of critical thinking skills in the targeted book. The main skills were available as follows: Interpretation, Evaluation of arguments, Recognition of assumptions, Deduction, and Inference. The most available subskills are: defining criteria for making decisions, providing details that support the interpretation, reaching a conclusion from data, matching the reason with the result. The least available subskills are: giving examples, selecting the right inference, judging the credibility and sufficiency of resources, and defining the best interpretation. Discrimination between facts and opinions was not available. Moreover, many recommendations were introduced.
